What is an Explorer Holiday?

If you are new to cycle touring, an explorer holiday introduces you to the adventure of cycling with the security of knowing assistance is only a call away. Experienced cycle tourists, can benefit too. The Veloloco explorer holiday solves the most common problem - how do I get back home at the end of my trip? The key difference with an explorer tour over an organised, or self guided, tour is that you retain control, you have flexibility to choose where you go and what you see and when you'd like to see it! We don't book your accommodation in advance, you choose your own path!

What is a Self Guided Holiday?

If you like the sound of the explorer holiday but think you'd like more assistance with route plans and prefer the security of pre-booked accommodation, then a self guided holiday is for you. The Veloloco self guided holiday is tailored to your abilities and preferences. For example, a Pyreneen traverse of 20 cols can take a fit cyclist less than a week. A self guided tour matched to this cyclist would only require about 6 nights accommodation. For a keen recreational cyclist, the usual time taken to traverse the Pyrenees is 10 days. Consequently, 9 nights accommodation would be pre-booked. You still have freedom to travel at your own pace each day, all you need to do is arrive at the designated overnight stop. Luggage transfer is an option for self guided holidays.

What is a Fully Supported Tour?

To put it simply, a fully supported tour has a mini-bus and daily support on-hand for maintenance and luggage transfers. You are accompanied each day by a member of the Veloloco team and these holidays are run in groups of about 8 people. Fully supported tours for larger numbers of cyclists, e.g. cycling clubs, can be accommodated given advance notice.

Where is VéloLoco?

VéloLoco is in the centre of Aulus-les-Bains, in the Ariege in the Midi-Pyrenees. Aulus village is on the coast to coast route for walkers along the GR10 and cyclists following the official RAID Pyreneen route. The "Tour de France" (copyright ASO) passes through the village regularly We are at the heart of the action!

What do I need to bring?

If you are hiring equipment from us, then you will need to bring clothes (shorts, shirts and appropriate shoes) and a camera! We will supply the bike, helmet, panniers, barbag, pump, cyclo-computer, heavy duty locks, limited tool kit including spare inner tube, maps and emergency phone number. If you intend to camp, we also have 2 person MacPac tents & Whisperlite stoves available.

Can I bring my own bike?

Certainly, so long as you stay with us during your holiday for at least 2 nights, you can take advantage of our explorer holiday pick-up and emergency services.

Do you drop off, pick up and recover cyclists?

We do. We have special rates for recovery of cyclists & equipment (based on distance from the VeloLoco base) providing you are staying with us for at least 2 nights. This allows people to be transported to the base of specific climbs and arrange for collection (subject to availability of resources) as part of our service. The cost is chargeable as if you have booked a bespoke explorer holiday.

Can I stay at VéloLoco in Aulus-les-Bains if I'm passing through?

Certainly, as long as we have accommodation available! Please check in advance.

All cancellations must be made in writing and sent to us by registered post. If you cancel a holiday giving more than 60 days notice, your balance is refunded in full, less any costs incurred. With notice of less than 60 days, a proportion of the balance may be refunded at our discretion. In all cases, any deposit paid is non-refundable. Please ensure you take out adequate holiday insurance to cover the unforeseen. Proof of insurance is a condition of hire. Click for further information about our terms and conditions.

What can I leave for a deposit when hiring a bike?

We select expensive equipment so you enjoy your holiday. We regret that we cannot hire equipment without a deposit and we have tried to keep the size of the deposit to a minimum. The deposit can be made in cash (refunded at the end of your holiday) less deductions for damage. You can also leave your drivers license or passport (if not intending to travel into Spain or Andorra) as a deposit. Personal documents are retained until the hire equipment is returned and any damage has been paid for.

What if the bike is stolen during my holiday?

We provide high quality cables and locks, selected for their ability to resist attack. So long as you've locked the bike properly, it will be very difficult for a thief to steal. If a bike is stolen, then you must call us and inform the local authorities of the loss. Unless there is proof that the lock has been defeated, the full replacement cost of the equipment must be paid for by the person hiring. Personal documents are retained until either the hire equipment is returned or the loss has been paid for in full.
